Matt & Fan
Construction materials are mainly 1/2 inch thick plywood screwed to a 2x4 frame. The entire tunnel was built in 4 foot long sections that are bolted together. This made construction easier and allows for easy disasembly in the event the tunnel is to be moved.
(Shown while still under construction)
Outside Wind Tunnel
The inside of the tunnel is sanded smooth and painted. Test section lighting and windows remain to be installed. Inside Wind Tunnel
The fan is driven by a 400 HP engine with an automatic transmission. An automatic (as opposed to a standard) transmission protects the fan and structure by allowing a smooth start and also a smooth (coasting) stop if the engine should suddenly loose power. Brakes are also installed on the fan to assist in a smooth and controlled start as well as emergency stopping if necessary. Very fine and stable adjustments in airspeed are possible with a fine-adjust throttle cable. Engine and Fan
